Brown onions in oil, approx 10-15 minutes over medium heat.
Add remaining non spice ingredients, bring to boil, reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes.
Remove bay leaf and kombu, process in blender until smooth.
Strain back into pot and add spices, simmer for 10 minutes.
