Toasted Sesame Oil — a little goes a very long way, start with a little and add more to taste (Walmart) |

In 1 L measuring cup crush the bullion cube with a fork add the wakame, sesame oil and chives.
Add the water and bring to a boil in a microwave (approx 3-4 minutes). Stir to fully dissolve the bouillon cube.
Add any optional ingredients and adjust to taste.
If the soup doesn’t have enough body, you can add a bit more oil, or soy sauce, to make up for the lack of bonito.
The Kikkoman packet soup uses toasted sesame seeds + untoasted sesame oil, for a subtle sesame flavour. Using toasted sesame oil makes the sesame flavour more intense. You can adjust the toasted sesame oil to taste, including replacing some or all of it with veg. oil for body or even better scallion oil. The Kikkoman soup packet uses green onion/scallions which you can use if you have fresh, I typically substitute dried chives since its easier to keep in a pantry.
